Because I look at stained glass windows more from a design or artistic than religious point of view, I sometimes find connections pop unbidden into my mind when I am standing in front of them. So when I saw this Angel Gabriel, my first thought was, 'that's just the sort of thing Grayson Perry would love'.
Sure enough, it didn't take very long to find GP wearing a pink and hearts dress (details here).
Because no matter what anyone might say, there is a great deal of camp in church windows: they are full of androgynous beauty and extravagant frocks. It's one of the things I like so much about them.
These richly decorative garments were imagined by Karl Parsons (1884-1934) who I imagine, if he'd lived in another age, might very well have designed stage outfits and LP covers for pop stars in the 1970s and 1980s.
They are in a window in a Surrey church, surrounded by nice red-roofed houses like the one he included..
It's one of a set of five he designed 1908-10 which are all intense, full of wonderful detail and rich colour, and plenty of fabulousness.
